How Effective Social Media Really Is

Some girls in class have probably already heard about this but I wanted to share with the rest of you how cool this was. Last Wednesday my friend’s Chihuahua went missing. Within minutes, her and her roommates sent out text messages to all of their friends informing them of the situation and to keep an eye out for Moses. They formed a Facebook group that had a picture of Moses with the words MISSING and invited all of their friends. They also set their Facebook profile pictures to that same photo and updated their Twitter statuses. All of this happened in two hour time frame when Moses was returned to the girls by someone who saw them walking on the street and only recognized Moses from Facebook. It’s pretty amazing how effective social media can be when it is used right because it is a way to reach a large number of people in a quick amount of time.

Hey everyone!

So last night, Mark Zuckerberg spoke on how the updates of Facebook can make itself one of Google’s toughest competitors in regards to messaging. Though this video is long, I highly encourage you to find time to watch it. As seen in this video, communication is evolving and changing drastically from what it was even five years ago. With that, our relationships with others are also being redefined.

How do you see communication changing in the future?

Five websites featuring great holiday deals

At the time of this writing, the holidays are just around the corner. With the dreaded “Black Friday” just a little over a week away, I wanted to throw out some other places you can go year-round to get some great deals.

Online shopping is nothing new in this day and age, but there are some great items that are updated daily if not sooner on each of these websites.

Amazon Gold Box & Lightning Deals:

The Gold Box deal changes daily and the Lightning Deals change hourly each day. Lightning Deals only give snippet previews of what will be selling at each time frame. They range from GPS devices to jewelry, so there’s really something here for everyone.

Woot:

If you haven’t heard of Woot, then this could be a saving grace for you, especially if you like gadgets, wine, shirts, or whatever else. The shirts are unique and all the items change daily.

Whiskey Militia:

Do you like snowboard, surf, and skate clothing? Do you participate in any of those sports? If you said yes to either of these, check this site multiple times throughout the day. There are some great deals on everything from sunglasses to hoodies to snowboards.

Teefury:

Another daily website featuring a fresh and random print. If you or someone you know likes being that person on the block who has unique and witty shirts, this is the place to pick one up. Cheap too!

Daily Steals:

This one is similar to Woot. I bought a year subscription to Wired for three bucks on here. Many gadgets and jewelry for pretty dang cheap. Items change daily.

Anyone else heard of any other great online deals? Please, leave them in the comments!

How to increase student engagement…. Twitter?

In previous years, students were disciplined for doing other things in class that might distract them from paying attention. Social media tools like Facebook and Twitter were once prohibited because they disrupted the learning process, but a new study has found that social media may not have such a negative effect on student participation. “Students in a study who were asked to contribute to class discussions and complete assignments using Twitter actually  increased their engagement over a semester more than twice as much as a control group.”

The British Monarchy Joins Facebook!

I accidently found this article on BBC News, saying that the queen of Britain, Queen Elizabeth II, has launched that the British monarchy will join Facebook. I took me by surprise as I thought social media would not be appeal to the Queen’s generation – or the monachy at all! However, I was wrong! Actually, the British monarchy are very up-dated in terms of social media – read it for yourself:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11704599

I cannot stop wondering if this is slightly odd? Is the monarchy or any other monarchy (as the Danish) just a “business” that needs to promote itself in order to stay popular? And why promote itself through social media when it is not allowed to have a voice politics?

What do you think?

Check this out!

As I was doing some research for another class I came across this really interesting analysis of how Americans are spending their time online. Surprisingly (or not) most consumers are devoting the majority of their internet time to their social networks and blogs. Guess this is a great incentive for us to keep up our hard work…there is an audience to capture, we just have to find the best way to reach them!

New video blogging social network — VYou

A Twitter pal posted about a new video question forum, VYou. Users submit questions in a text box for the “interviewee” to respond via video. While recording, a recommend message length scale suggests the most desirable This is a great communication tool with ensuring that messages are received in its intended form, rather than a readers interpretation. With the use of webcams, it provides for a more personal and interactive connection as if you are sitting in the room with one another. Definitely check it out and give it a shot!

Facebook’s Role in Dating

On Mashable I came across a very interesting article where a Facebook study was able to study trends in dating and break ups. While I think it is very interesting they were able to find a trend in the days, seasons and times of the year that people are breaking up, I find it also intriguing how Facebook status’ have played a role in many relationships.

What I have realized among my peers is that the “break up” Facebook status has become a way for many people to attract attention and sympathy from others. Facebook “friends,” whether they are true and strong friends out in the real world, respond with consoling words, inspiration for living the single life and advice to just keep your head up. What I find really interesting is that this social network has allowed for these comments to be public and available for others to see; whereas, if you were to call up a friend or meet a friend in person and tell them about your break up, only you and your friend will know what is said between the two of you.

Is this break up Facebook status posted just to update about your life, or is it a way to make your ex feel bad and jealous, or is it even designed as an announcement that you’re back on the market? Interesting…
